Updated: Apr 8, 2021

What is a Whole Foods Plant Based Diet?

WFBP: A diet of foods which consists of whole grains, legumes, nuts/seeds, fruits, vegetables and is void of animal proteins, processed foods and oils.

What is included in a whole food diet:

* Whole grains, starchy vegetables and legumes make up the majority of the diet and daily caloric intake.

* Any and all Fruits and vegetables with no restrictions every day

* Nuts, seeds and healthy fats (small amounts daily or restricted depending on health goals)

* minimally processed foods, natural sugars and sweeteners

What is not included in a whole food plant based diet:

*Animal protein foods, including fish, eggs, and dairy, are excluded

*Processed foods that do not retain nutrients and fiber

* No oil is used, including olive and coconut oils

* Sugar in unnatural forms

How does this differ from a vegan diet?

Veganism is not just a diet; it is a lifestyle based on the love of animals. Although they may share many of the same qualities in food choices, they differ just as much. Veganism is not focused on our bodies health and therefore includes many foods that are highly processed and not fuel for our bodies. Many foods can be vegan and not WFPB, such as Oreo's, Vegan Ice cream, Mock meats and potato chips!

Why should anyone follow this diet and why no animal protein?!

Many studies have been done to show the benefits of prevention, reduction and even reversal of many common diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Animal proteins are connected to the growth hormone IGF-1 gene which is shown to be linked to cancer. I could list all the reasons why you should follow this diet, but take it from the experts!

Here are some links that will explain the benefits of this diet.

If you really want to get a great understanding on how food effects our whole bodies, I suggest watching the movie Forks Over Knives.

Now you have all this information, and it can be eye-opening and overwhelming! What do you do with it? What steps do you take next to benefit your body?

Many are not able to make a huge change over night! From those who try, many will fail. Our bodies, taste buds, and minds need to adjust. Start small and make a goal each week to add and change to get where you want to be. Need guidance? Reach out and I will can set up a plan suited for you!

Everyone has the ability to choose to set up for a future of health or disease; what choice will you choose?
